Ten tips for preparing to move house
Check out our 10 advices
-
Moving house
Remember to deal with any administrative issues such as: telephone lines, closing and opening water, gas and electricity accounts (tariffs vary depending on the company), notifying your local authorities of a change of address, sorting out any ID cards, post and so on.
-
Important documents
Keep all your important documents or items (ID, passport, keys, certificates, banking documents, medical files, employment contracts, etc.) in one box that you will store in a specific place.
-
Labelling and the practical side of planning your move
Clearly label your belongings, both furniture items and boxes, with where they need to go. You should also try, where possible, to help the moving team with their work by also telling them where you want the furniture to go.
-
Trained staff
If your budget permits, avoid using untrained staff for your move. Relocation is a job that requires know-how!
-
Unplugging the fridge
Reconnect your fridge and freezer 24 hours after the move.
-
Moving boxes
Source purpose-designed moving boxes - they are easier to load and will also maximise space in the loading vehicle. This will facilitate the moving team in their work, ensuring that they do not lose any time while loading. Take care not to overfill the boxes; the maximum recommended weight is about 30kg per box.
-
Parking restrictions
Make the necessary arrangements with your local police authorities so that on the day of your move you won't have any added stress from parking restriction problems. You can also get the moving company to sort this out for you.
-
Household appliances
Clean and leave all household appliances to dry to avoid the formulation of mould or discharge during relocation.
-
Disassembling your furniture
If you decide to disassemble and reassemble your furniture yourself, for example your wardrobe, make sure that you put any relating items (screws, keys, connectors, etc.) into one envelope, and remember to number any spare parts.
-
Inventory and condition report
Prepare an inventory and condition report upon entering and leaving your home.
